Primary and Secondary Searches: Are they Done yet?

Here is a video by Lou that really brings the title to light, but you have to commit to getting the searches done.

Great point. Secondary IS mandatory. I’ll give my brief reasoning.
The idea of a primary is to give a QUICK sweep of the highest danger areas first and then fan out, that way the possible victims in the most danger will hopefully be found in time.
The secondary should be done as soon as possible after the main body of fire is knocked down and before overhaul. The secondary should be way more thorough and performed by a different company. You want to make sure that you aren’t walking on anybody while overhauling.

Tough break for everybody in that video.

My only quarter backing comment is; if you break a window out, take the extra second to clear the entire window out. The firefighter had a little bit of trouble going in the window, imagine if he had to come back out? Remove the cross part of the frame. I only mention that because I had to bail out with my Captain 6 years ago and I had cleaned out the ENTIRE window (no obstructions) and he only cleared the glass. Guess who’s window we went out?

Great video. Also reinforces the point that whoever provides your EMS needs to be game-ready throughout your incident. Runnng down the street with a dead kid nevber looks good. In Chicago we have an ALS ambo crew staged in sector 1, with all equipment, at every fire. Primarily there for RIT but if a civilian needs immediate assistance they have it right outside the front door.

Really reinforces the importance of the secondary search and how important EMS is to these operations
