Hey everyone, I’m back like a really bad habit! How often in your next tour will you as a fireman or a company officer hear the word “Why” come out of a members mouth? This word can be good, bad, or just downright insubordinate. This is my getting back in the grove, so this will be short, but for anyone that knows me at all, much more is coming on this issue! Drillmaster’s challenge is simple. Count the “Why’s” your next tour, keep track positive or negative. Let me know and we are off to the races! I’m back, more opinionated as ever Brothers! Always remember those who came before us on this Memorial Day Weekend! we are our Brothers Keepers!

I have a guy on my group… He has to be the best firefighter EVER. In my department the trucks usually investigate the alarms and the engine stands by like a coiled spring. Maybe it’s because we are one of those evil “Legacy” departments. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge. Anyways, Mr. 75 years experience who has only 8 years on a fire department loves to be my anchor. “We should let the truck investigate, I hear them coming” “Why are we going out for a drill, don’t you trust us?” Why do we have to do District Familiarization in the night club area as the clubs are closing at 2AM?”
He is like a living Good Idea Fairy, and I usually tell him “That’s a great Idea!” and then ignore him.
Although after his last great idea, which was to wait for the truck, I advised him that it was an outstanding idea and also “Failure to respond” was a fire-able offense.
The rest of my crew is pretty motivated. Even the guy with 30+ years doesn’t say anything when it’s time to work or drill. He has no problem with a younger guy as his boss. But when he’s working I don’t deliberatly go out after the street lights come on.

Fortunately, I’ve rarely had this type employee assigned to me. On the few occasions I have, I answered the negativity by requesting an answer from The WHY Guy.
Why? WHY not? What are your reasons for the question? What part of this are you having problems with? Many times, the answers provided by WHY people are stupid answers. So stupid, even WHY people realize others are noting his/her being a difficult person. A great deal of times, this can be enough for the WHY person to become a participating person. Or at least a quieter one…
