Residential Search Drill Part I

For this drill you will need

  1. Full turnout gear w/o SCBA
  2. Room setup like a bedroom
  3. Hand tools
  4. Department SOP’s for search

Remember to cover the basics

  1. Check the door for heat before opening
  2. when you enter the room check behind the door. Even though it may not stop there could be a decent pocket for a small person or child
  3. Pick a pattern left or right
  4. Use tool to keep you oriented to wall depending on the search you are doing
  5. Ensure that you are actually finding the windows and doors
  6. Communicate size of room. No point in crowding into a small room

Just a few rants for the week

  1. Don’t assume because a firefighters career has been prodominatly in the South that they are stupid
  2. When fighting commercial structures always secure two water supplies
  3. When you decide to promote up does not mean you have to be a jerk, but it does mean you have to do your job
  4. stay in the best physical condition possible or the stairs you have to climb will tell on you
  5. When you are truly the best running your mouth does not display, but performance will tell

Down South Trucking!

Often times fire ground operations dictate aggressive engine work and the situation will get better for everyone, but who is looking out for the firefighters making the push. We are condition to make excuses or rely on the Fast/RIT teams to do basics fire gorund functions such as placing ground ladders for egress for operations such as VES or even emergency escapes when conditions change. Chief Ed Hadfield and a number of others out there have ask the question WHERE HAVE THE LADDERS GONE? So I ask you when operating at a dwelling or building fire does your fire ground look like this and why not?

No Excuses Get it done!

Flashover Training Needs To Be A Part Of Basic Recruit Training

As firefighters enter the service they should be given as much education as possible to survive. Flashovers are not just something that should be taught out of a book or viewed on a video. Until you have truly been able to witness a flashover and the signs leading up to a flashover, you are truly not prepared. Firefighters are in desperate need of this training as a part of the basic firefighting classes due to the amount of btu’s given off by the materials that are produced now. With the increase in using plastics and foams in building materials and furniture, the list could go on, these events can happen a lot sooner than anticipated. A few signs of Impending flashover are:

  1. Thick black turbulent smoke
  2. Banking down of the smoke
  3. High heat build up
  4. Little fingers of fire are showing ( Rollover or Flameover )

Simulators like in the above training can be brought in by professionals to let you experience a flashover and teach you techniques to recognize and prevent a flashover from occuring. Learning about flashover is apart of basic fire behavior so why not the hands on training.
